Letter to America by Donald Levering

The Fats Man Eyes Greenland

Nowhere can we evade the clamor
of his craving to shovel on this
misnamed empire of snow and ice.

Individuals pray as soon as he has crammed his bleak
insides with an expanse of whiteness
he’ll be glad. However no, already

he’s scheming to assert the Northern Lights
so he can drape them over the nation
whereas his crimes get buried in permafrost.

He tucks a serviette underneath his chin
and bites right into a calving glacier.
He’d most likely end it off if

it weren’t for the Inuit’s sled canine,
who scent his path of treachery and
refuse to be hitched to this heavy

two-legged chasing after his urge for food.
